These services run on servers operated by Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany). When you access them, the server processes technically necessary connection data (IP address, timestamp, requested resource) in log files. These logs serve operational security and troubleshooting (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and are not combined with other data sources.
Only technically necessary cookies are used (session and login cookies). There is no tracking for advertising or analytics purposes.
Accounts on walking-desert.com are created exclusively by the operator (closed user group). Username and e-mail address are processed (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) to provide the services — including sign-in, e-mail, chat, video conferencing, and file storage — to invited users.
Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection. To exercise these rights, contact the e-mail address above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.
You can play without an account. What you write in the game, and any links in it, is sent to OpenAI to be checked against its moderation categories and to receive the oracle's answer. Our server makes that request, so OpenAI receives the text only, not your IP address or any identifier of you. Links to Wikipedia are fetched by our server, not by your browser, so Wikipedia sees our server, not you.
Your journey (what you wrote and the answers) is kept in our
server's memory only, for 48 hours after your last step, and is
never written to disk. It is tied to a cookie
(wd_journey) that holds a random identifier and
nothing else; the cookie is technically necessary to continue a
journey (§ 25(2) TDDDG). Our logs and statistics count steps by
outcome (answered, refused, turned away) and never contain your
words, your links or your IP address.
The legal basis is the performance of the service you request by taking a step (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). OpenAI processes your words on our behalf, as our processor.
